Super Bowl

Abby C., Staff Writer

Some people watch the Super Bowl for the funny new commercials, some watch it for the halftime show, and some watch it solely for the enjoyment of the game. This years’ Super Bowl was defiantly different than any other years’. There was a great half time show, a memorable performance by Sandy Hook Elementary School, a power outage, and a very tense game. The game was the Baltimore Ravens versus the San Francisco 49ers. The game was a very close game, at the end of the fourth quarter, the Ravens were the winners. The final score was 34-31.

To start the game, the chorus class from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut sang "America the Beautiful" with singer, Jennifer Hudson. Towards the end of the year 2012, there was a tragedy at Sandy Hook.  Hudson says in an interview that performing with the chorus was very emotional.

The Niners had a bit of a slow start, ending the first quarter with 3 points. At the end of the second quarter, they still only had 3 points. They got those three points by making a single field goal. At the end of the first and second quarter combined the Ravens had 21 points. A lot of Ravens fans thought that they had a pretty clear victory, even though they still had another half to go.

The halftime show was definitely a memorable one by Beyonce. She performed a medley of her hits, including “Love on Top,” “Crazy in Love,” “End of Time,” and “Baby Boy” before she was joined by Destiny’s Child band mates, Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland. Together, they started with “Bootylicious” and then sang “Independent Woman” before ending it with “Single Ladies.” Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland left the stage, and Beyonce then sang “Halo” as a solo. The halftime performance featured plenty of fire, ice and smoke.

The third quarter was the most surprising, by far. To start off, Jacoby Jones of the Baltimore Ravens made not only Super Bowl history but also set a new record. He ran a 108 yard for a kick return and then made a touchdown, giving the Ravens another 7 points. Then to everyone’s’ surprise, the Superdome lost power in the third quarter with 13:22 left on the clock. Nobody is 100% sure as to why the power went out, but some are blaming Beyonce’s performance. 34 minutes later, power returned. Those 34 minutes were very helpful to the Niners but not very helpful for the Ravens. At the end of the third quarter, the Niners gained 17 points and the Ravens only gained 7.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Ravens had 28 points and the Niners had 23 points. Everyone was now sitting at the edge of their seats; the game was really anyone’s. The fourth quarter started with the Niners getting a touchdown, but it was the only touchdown they made. The Ravens gained 6 points at the end of the game, they were the victors. They had 34 points and the Niners had 31.

Not only was this a tense game for both the Niners fans and the Ravens fans, but it was exceptionally tense for the Niners. If they won the game, they would be tied with the Pittsburg Steelers for amount of games won at the Super Bowl, as a total of 6 times. But since they didn’t, the Steelers are still ahead of them by one win. There was defiantly some family tension on the field as well. The head coach for the Niners is Jim Harbaugh, and his brother, John Harbaugh, is the head coach for the Ravens. There was defiantly some sibling rivalry on the playing field.

Whether you liked the ending of Super Bowl XLVII or not, this year’s game was definitely one to remember. With a World Record breaking 108 yard kick by Jacoby Jones, an unforgettable performance by Sandy Hook, a very memorable performance by Beyonce, and a very tense game between the Ravens and the 49ers, it will be very hard to forget.

Don't you love to see our team winning our games? Our wrestling team is one of our best sports this year. After an undefeated season, the BMS wrestling team ended the season with a 2nd place finish for in the City Championship.

After 13 years, we are undefeated and a force to be reckoned with. It took a lot of hard work to pull it off but they did it. The four captains of wresting are Nick Y., Tresean B.,Austin B. and Johnathan B. The wrestlers all enjoy the sport and joined for different reasons. We asked a couple of wrestlers different questions and were very surprised to hear what they thought. We asked Nick Y. What's the best thing about wrestling and he said, " The best thing about wrestling is learning self control and discipline. Wrestling is a sport where you can tune your anger into something great you can better yourself with the help of your teammates. I think wrestling can be considered the sport of life." Also, we asked ," why did you join wrestling?" and he said," because I grew up on this sport. But just saying wrestling is a competitive sport where you can become a better person in general." We asked two other Wrestlers named Cody R. and Kyle K..  We asked Cody " What's your favorite move" and he said, " The Cradle". We also asked Kyle " What's the best thing about the team" and he said, " We are all friends". They both said," that the best wrestler is Nick Y.". Cody said, " The worst injury is to pop your hip out." Kyle said, " The worst injury is to kicked in the mouth." Lastly, we asked them ," How do you prepare for a game?" and they said," lots of excerise and teamwork".

We are so proud and happy with the wrestlers this year. They won and put us on top and we hope that we can keep the spirit of Brandon Middle School thriving.

Run, Brandon, Run!

The Running Club is the latest addition to the BMS’s variety of clubs. This fabulous club is sponsored by Mrs. Ayscue. This club has few members, but every one of them has a great big goal to fulfill. The Running Club was training to run in the Tidewater Virginia Autism Awareness 5K & 1 Mile which was on April 7th. Unfortunately, they needed money to buy their tickets to the marathon. They hosted a hat day for the school as a fundraiser.

On March 6, 2013, the Running Club had their fundraiser. The Running Club made posters to hang around the school to encourage students to purchase a wristband. They set up their stand in the left corner of the lobby, and they received their fundraiser money. The Running Club collected $128 just enough to buy tickets for their marathon!

Back on topic, the Running Club’s activities, of course, consist of running. They meet every Thursday, and they run in and out of school grounds. While they’re inside, the members of the Running Club dash around the halls. When the weather is great outside, they run out on the track. Each member has their own personal running goal they would like to reach each club meeting, but as club, they hope to do twenty laps all together. We asked each member of the Running Club what their goals are. Many members like to meet their club goal each meeting, but some like to go above and beyond~ We also asked the members of the Running Club how they feel about running. A few run for fun while others dislike running. We’re not sure why those members joined the running club. The others members joined the Running Club for other reasons like for training, exercise, or to get out of another sport.

In conclusion, the Running Club is quite a busy club. They give it their all while they participate in club activities. They did a spectacular job in their fundraiser, and The Running Club makes Brandon proud! They did a wonderful job in April. :)
